BRASILIA: HOMAGE à OSCAR NIEMEYER

BRASILIA: HOMAGE à OSCAR NIEMEYER (2006)

"BRASILIA follows my work with RODS AMERICA. What influenced my visual direction for ROADS AMERICA & BRASILIA are the immense dark paintings Mark Rothko created for the Menil Chapel in Texas. In both series, light, space and scale play an essential role. I wanted the images to remain minimal searching for the essential rather than the obvious signs of civilization. I am interested in the silence that emanates from the image.  Being the daughter of Architects, and loving Architecture, I chose to work on Oscar Niemeyer’s monumental 1960’s creations in the city of BRASILIA in Brazil.  I kept a minimal approach to the image and I left the sky overpower the monumental buildings.  Brasilia reminded me of the ancient Mayan cities, with their monumental structures sticking out of the jungle. I use what photographers call a ‘purist’ approach to the image. I work “full negative”, framing each image precisely before I take the final picture. I do not alter nor manipulate the images."  - silas shabelewska

Life is more important than architecture….that is why we absolutely need to look at the sky and feel how insignificant we are – the offspring of nature, just as the animals of the earth, the sky and the oceans.”
